Aluminum or vinyl windows in an Ontario winter?

The old advice, and why it is partly out of date

The traditional argument against aluminum in a cold climate was straightforward. Aluminum conducts heat, so an aluminum frame acts as a thermal bridge straight through your wall. That was a fair criticism of older aluminum windows and it is why vinyl came to dominate the Canadian residential market.

Modern architectural aluminum uses a thermal break, an insulating barrier separating the inside face of the frame from the outside face. That changes the picture considerably. It does not make aluminum automatically better than vinyl, but it does make the blanket old rule unreliable.

Where aluminum genuinely wins

• Frame width. Aluminum is structurally stronger, so the frame can be much slimmer for the same opening. More glass and more daylight, which is the difference people actually notice day to day.
• Large openings. Wide sliding doors and big picture windows are where vinyl struggles structurally and aluminum does not.
• Dimensional stability. Aluminum moves less through freeze-thaw cycles, which matters for seal life over decades.
• Colour retention. Factory-finished aluminum holds colour better than vinyl, particularly in dark colours on south-facing walls.
• Lifespan. Properly installed aluminum frames commonly outlast vinyl.

Where vinyl is still the right answer

• Standard replacements. For ordinary sized windows in an ordinary house, good vinyl is genuinely good and you should not feel talked out of it.
• Baseline thermal performance. Vinyl is a poor conductor by nature, so a decent vinyl frame starts from an advantage that aluminum has to engineer its way to.
• Simplicity. Fewer variables in specification, and a very mature supply chain.

What to compare instead of frame material

Frame material is the argument people have. It is rarely what decides how your house feels in February. These matter more.

• The U-factor of the whole window, not the centre of glass. Manufacturers publish both and they are not the same number.
• ENERGY STAR certification for the correct climate zone, which also determines whether the window qualifies for Ontario rebate programs.
• Whether the quote covers proper installation: removal, insulating the rough opening, flashing, capping and interior finishing.
• Who installs it. An excellent window installed badly performs worse than an average window installed properly, and installation is where most window complaints actually originate.

The honest summary

If you have standard openings and want a straightforward replacement, good vinyl is a sensible choice.

If you want maximum glass, have large or unusual openings, care how the frames look, or plan to stay in the house for decades, aluminum with a proper thermal break is worth considering seriously.
