Countertop materials: cost vs. durability

Butcher blockCost:Durability:Warm, affordable wood; needs oiling and isn't water-loving.

GraniteCost:Durability:Natural stone, heat-resistant; needs periodic sealing.

Quartz (engineered)Cost:Durability:Best all-rounder: hardest, non-porous, no sealing. Most popular today.

MarbleCost:Durability:Most luxurious look, but soft, it scratches and stains more easily.
